REA has electrified over 5 900 Rural Institutions since its inception.

Notes:
- The statistics on electrified institutions include 218 institutions where solar systems have
- been installed.
- Four (4) chieftainships already had electricity before the incumbent chiefs were installed.
- Out of the 52 chieftainships that are vacant, 28 have benefited from electricity.
- The outstanding statistics on Business Centres, Villages, Small Scale Farms and Other reflect the back log on customer paid projects.
Electricity End Use Infrastructure Development

REA has registered success in the areas of Agro-processing and irrigation.
1. Agro processing
To date REA has commissioned twenty three (23) milling plants at rural schools in various Provinces. It is estimated that fifty-eight (58) milling plants will be established by the end of 2009.
2. Irrigation
Rea has facilitated the development and rehabilitation of;
- Ten (10) irrigation and water supply schemes
- One (1) micro-drip irrigation scheme
In 2004 REA imported irrigation equipment in bulk from India for the development of over 2000 hectares of irrigation schemes for rural institutions and individual farmers.
3. Alternative Energy Technologies (AET)
REA has successfully installed;
- Sixty one (61) mini grid solar systems at rural schools and clinics to date.
- Seven (7) solar home systems at chiefs’ homesteads were electrified using stand-alone solar systems.
It is estimated that over 500 mini grid systems will be installed by 2009.
4. Consultancy
REA has done a feasibility study for ZERO on energy and water demand estimates and projections at Temaruru rural service centre.
REA has done a study on energy demand for a power back up system for several customers in the country. |
